British Berkefeld® / Big
Berkey® Water Filters
Please note: Berkey purifier systems (and component parts) are not available for sale to California or Iowa, although the shower filters ARE available. The manufacturer deems certification requirements in those states to be so costly and/or burdensome that meeting them is unworkable. We're as frustrated as you are about this situation. Remedies are being sought but will, at best, take time. Testing by independent laboratories (as well as hundreds of thousands of highly satisfied users) has established that Berkey systems provide superior purification and superior water.
The Ceramic Berkey filter systems are less popular than the Black Filter systems, so if you prefer the older systems, or don't see a Berkey product you would like,
please email or call us for details and ordering information.
Big Berkey® Water Filter with Super
Sterasyl Ceramic Filter Elements
Generations of health-conscious people
around the world have recognized
clean, fresh drinking water as a key foundation of a healthy life and
healthy body. No amount of vitamins or supplements can substitute for the
vital life-sustaining properties of nourishing, healthful drinking water.
Along with nutritious food and clean air, clean water is truly essential
to life. Unfortunately, good
tasting, sparkling, wholesome drinking water
isn't as common as it once was. Water is often laced with chlorine, lead,
high levels of harmful bacteria, and other unwanted chemicals and
contaminants that can threaten health and produce unpleasant tastes and
odors. Even expensive bottled water can contain these same contaminants.
Distillation deoxygenates water, creating a flat taste. Many water
treatment systems don't adequately remove pathogenic bacteria, and many
remove the beneficial minerals that your body
needs.
Berkey® Systems are the world's standard in
economical gravity water filtration and
purification systems, providing incredibly clean, pure water in both
normal and hostile environments. Berkey® systems can purify both treated
water and untreated raw water from such sources as remote lakes, streams,
stagnant ponds, and water supplies in foreign countries with substandard
regulations.
Berkey® Water Products are divided
into two categories: Filters and Purifiers. The difference
between filters and purifiers is defined by the EPA: A filter must be
capable of "Log 4" contaminant reduction, and a purifier must be capable
of a "Log 7" contaminant reduction. Log 4 (simple filtration) means at
least 99.99% of contaminants are removed, leaving no more than 1 part per
ten thousand of the original contaminant.
The systems shown on this page are
equipped with ceramic filter elements and offer the "filtration
level" of contaminant reduction. Ceramic filtration is entirely
sufficient for many conditions.
The higher "purification"
reduction of Log 7 means that
99.99999% of contaminants are removed, leaving no more than 1 part
per ten million of the original contaminant (1000x the
effectiveness of the "filter" specification.) Berkey® Systems
using Black Berkey® purifying elements achieve the "purifier
level" of performance will provide ultra-pure water not only in
normal conditions, but also in circumstances of extreme and highly
dangerous contamination.

Berkey® Water Filters in Stainless
Steel
Stainless steel is the classic look
of Berkey® water systems. Equipped
with Super Sterasyl ceramic filtration elements, the stainless steel
Berkey® water filter has filtered water for millions of people around the
globe for decades. The wide range of available sizes makes a stainless
system ideal for many Berkey® users; the most popular size by far is the
"Big Berkey®".
The British Berkefeld water filter
shares many characteristics with the
Rolls Royce automobile. Both are old marques, both are made in Great
Britain, and each, in its respective field, represents the pinnacle of
quality. The British Berkefeld water filter uses ceramic "Super Sterasyl"
filters to reduce up to 99.99% of particulates, cysts, parasites and
pathogenic bacteria including but not limited to E. Coli, Cryptosporidium,
Giardia and Salmonella Typhi. These filters will reduce chlorine, rust,
sediment and organic chemicals with nominal particulate filtration rating
efficiencies of 99.99% filtration at 0.9 microns, 99.9% at 0.5 microns,
and 98% at 0.2 microns.
The
durable ceramic filter elements can be cleaned many times with
a soft brush or Scotch Brite pad. Each element will purify up to 2000
gallons, depending on water turbidity (so using four elements, total
gallonage would be up to 8000 gallons.) If you're filtering water from a
cloudy stream or lake, you'll get somewhat less gallonage before you need
to replace the elements, compared to filtering tap or rain water.
Filtration rate is 1 gallon per hour for the 4-filter unit and 1/2 gallon
per hour for the 2-filter unit. These filters work by gravity, so no
electricity is required. Easy to follow assembly and operating
instructions are included. Housing is gleaming, hygienic stainless steel.
British Berkefeld water filter design follows the "KISS Principle" of
simplicity! The SS-4 and SS-2 models are identical
exceptfor
the number of filter elements they come with. If you buy an SS-4 you can
removed two elements, plugging the holes with the provided rubber plugs,
and operate it exactly as if you'd bought the SS-2 (while having two spare
filter elements.) Likewise, you can purchase the SS-2 and increase
filtration speed later by adding two more elements if you wish. Dimensions
are 8"W x 19"H assembled, 8"W x 13.5"H nested for storage. Upper tank
holds 1.7 gallons when four of the 9" filter elements are in use, and
capacity of the lower tank is 2 gallons (we've
seen other capacities claimed; these are our
measurements.)
Optional PF-4 Reduction Elements:
The optional PF-4 elements are designed
to be used in conjunction with the standard filter elements. They reduce
MTBE, fluoride, lead and arsenic. They are attached on the underside of
the upper (reservoir) tank, directly underneath each of the standard
filter elements that are attached inside the reservoir. (To further
clarify the PF-4 installation, this means that the PF-4 filter elements
are positioned within the filtered-water tank, and when the filtered-water
tank is full, the PF-4 elements will be submerged.)
British Berkefeld water filters have
previously been distributed under the name "Royal Doulton Water Filter."
The filters are functionally identical under either name. For durable,
proven, foolproof delivery of extremely pure water, the British Berkefeld
water filter has been the ultimate answer for many years, and remains so.

Super Sterasyl Ceramic Filter
Elements are the world's finest ceramic
filtration elements, impregnated with pure silver to be self-sterilizing.
Flow rate will depend somewhat on which system they are in (Big Berkey,
Royal Berkey, Imperial Berkey or Crown Berkey) because the deeper
reservoirs of the larger systems create greater water pressure against the
ceramic elements. Each element will purify up to 2000
gallons, depending on water turbidity (silt, etc.)

granules, which are most effective in removing or reducing chlorine,
hydrogen sulfide, microorganisms, scale and water-soluble heavy metals
such as lead, mercury, and iron. KDF process media also kill bacteria and
inhibit the growth of bacteria, algae, and fungi. As an added benefit, KDF
media reduce lime scale, mold, and fungi in your shower. KDF process media
are completely safe so the process is not toxic and does not cause any
adverse side
effects.
